3 Wise Tips for Choosing a Dietary Supplements

dietary supplements

Dietary supplements have been forsaken usually due to our busy lives making it hard for us to know for sure if we are hitting the nutritional mark. Not everyone has the time or energy to create detailed diet plans. We may assume that we are eating well enough. But do we know what the nutritional value of every meal we consume is, if we are filling the gaps, and meeting our recommended dietary allowances?

Taking supplements will help ease your mind about whether or not you’re getting enough nutrients each day. The market is filled with so many dietary supplement options; the choices are overwhelming. Here are 3 wise tips to help you decide what is right for you:

1.  Find Out What You Need

Each person’s dietary requirements are unique. Your needs will depend on factors such as your age, regular diet, exercise habits, pre-existing medical conditions, genetics or any health problems you’re at risk for.

Who you are, lifestyle, and medical history will determine your nutritional needs. If you have elevated triglycerides, you could benefit from Vitamin B3. If you are a woman trying to get pregnant, your doctor may recommend that you start taking folic acid which will help prevent birth defects. And if you are at risk for osteoporosis, your physician may advise that you take vitamin D and calcium.

2. Do Your Homework

It’s important that you can take a bottle in your hand and understand the ingredients on the labels. If there’s something that you don’t recognize, look it up, ask your doctor, or ask the pharmacist.

In rare cases, the dosage that you need may differ from what is printed on the bottle. But remember that your doctor will have a special reason for why you may have to take a higher dose, and it may only be for a time. Unless otherwise specified, always follow the supplement’s instructions.

Know which supplements are most recommended for your age group and gender. At different stages of your life, you will require different vitamins and minerals to support your body’s day-to-day needs. And there are also supplements that are specific to only male or female.

3. Shop Smart

With so many options out there, you have the opportunity to compare. While it may be time-consuming, you won’t regret it. After all, it’s for your health. Compare brands, product reviews, and labels.

Every brand has its own marketing strategy, and it would be unwise to fall for the one that has the flashiest and most visually appealing ads. Don’t settle for the first one you do research on either. And while you may have a friend that swears by their dietary supplements, remember that their nutritional needs are different from yours.

When choosing the right dietary supplement for you, find one that has a realistic approach on what vitamins and supplements can do. Find a brand whose philosophy on health and wellness agrees with your own. Many vitamin and mineral supplement brands will claim that their products will fill all your nutritional needs regardless of what you eat while another brand is firm that it is a healthy combination of exercise, nutrition, and supplementation.
