5 Steps to a Healthy Post-Holiday Detox

Post-Holiday DetoxThe holidays are a time full of tempting cookies, rich desserts, and many drinks, and it’s only natural to want to indulge. However, now that the festivities are over, most people are anxious to get their nutrition back on track. You can start to feel a little more like yourself and help curb those sweet cravings by doing a post-holiday detox. However, before you choose just any detox, you need to ensure that you are taking the proper steps to be healthy, and are not harming your body and denying it the nutrition it really needs. Here are five steps to a healthy post-holiday detox.

1. Drink Your Recommended Amount of Water … If Not More

There are numerous benefits to drinking your recommended amount of water every single day. It not only gives you energy and helps regulate your system, but it also reduces hunger and increases your metabolism. When you drink water, you have less desire to eat sweets and other foods. You will also feel much better inside and out, which encourages you to choose healthier options throughout your day.

2. Take Proper Supplements

The right supplements and vitamins can help your body handle and remove the harmful processed sugars you ingested over the holidays. While there are a variety of vitamins you can take, there are several that can help remove toxins from the body better than others. A few vitamins and supplements to consider include:

3. De-Junk Your Home

Once you begin to have the fluids flowing through your body and have the right supplements on hand, it is important that you remove junk food from your home. Go through your pantry, cupboards, fridge, freezer, and even your secret stash of chocolate and throw out all your temptations. Additionally, you’ll want to come up with a plan for when you must go out to eat. Fast food, take out, and fancy restaurants provide calorie-heavy foods. Having a healthy option in mind ahead of time helps you avoid making poor food choices.

4. Meal Prep

You can stock your home with plenty of fruits and vegetables, but if they just sit in the fridge or on your counter, they do you no good. After your trip to the store, wash your fruits and vegetables then chop, dice, slice, or cook them. Put them in snack-size baggies or prepare them so you can quickly add them to your dinner dishes. If they are accessible and easy to eat with little prep work, you are more likely to grab these healthy foods for snacking instead of turning to junk food.

5. Recruit Your Friends and Family

When you have a group of people working with you and encouraging you throughout your detox, you are more likely to resist temptation and make healthy choices. Find a supportive group of family and friends who can hold you accountable for your choices. Report to the group regarding your choices and tell them about your progress and how you feel each day. They don’t even need to participate in the detox with you, you just need someone to talk to, give you encouragement, and motivate you to stick with your goals.

A post-holiday detox is not going to be easy. There will be ups and downs, but the most important thing is you stay strong and keep your health goals in mind. With a little self-control, you will feel better in no time and you’ll be well on your way to achieving wellness from within.
